XIII: El Cascador (vol 10)

Hard to believe we're past the half-way mark already on this series, not that the creators have let it stunt the work at all. Rather than falling into a predictive rut, Van Hamme continues to pull out surprises and send our expectations off in the wrong direction before cunningly revealing the true intent.

Following on directly from events in 'For Maria', Jason is held prisoner in the imposing Roca Negra fortress, but thanks to a clever and daring rescue attempt orchestrated by his friends he achieves freedom. This is short-lived, however, as the rebels take control of the country and the new president has Jason arrested to face a revolutionary tribunal. Many believe that Jason is the man they know as El Cascador, thought killed four years ago, but Jason's amnesia prevents him from knowing the truth and he fears further manipulation by unseen powers.

Ultimately he gets the answers he seeks, but they come from an unexpected source in a dramatic manner. Exactly what they are… well, you'll have to read it, won't you.

XIII continues to be a beacon for intelligent, in-depth and entertaining comics. Viva El Cascador!
