Thorgal Vol 11: The Invisible Fortress

/By Rosinski and Van Hamme

A new Thorgal arriving still generates a buzz of excitement with me. Rosinski's adept art and Van Hamme's insistence on taking the story into the unexpected make it a continuously inventive series.

We join Thorgal still apart from his family and travelling with Kris of Valnor. He's having disturbing dreams about the family he's left behind and, following an altercation with two locals by a river, decides it is time to return and leave Kris to her own devices.

Thorgal meets an old woman who talks of his past and of the gods that play with his life, and of an Invisible Fortress where Thorgal can release himself from the gods' manipulation. The river people, however, are in pursuit and take the unaware Thorgal prisoner. He escapes, with help, and a manhunt begins, forcing Thorgal into the mountains where he is unwittingly reunited with an injured Kris and the nature of the Invisible Fortress is revealed to him.

I won't give away the ending, but suffice to say it's pure Van Hamme, and reason enough for anyone to be reading these books. A brilliant series from a gifted creative team.

And if you liked that: If you've not picked up the first Thorgal yet, do so! You're missing out!
