Here's an interesting science fiction concept for you. What should we do if the human race discovers an uninhabited planet and settles in to reap the natural resources for two hundred years only to discover that the native population have been off travelling and now want their home back? Quite a conundrum, and one Valerian and Laureline have to tackle in this latest edition from Cinebook.
There's some definite comparisons drawn with the plight of ethnic groups, most obviously that of the Native Americans, but it's done sympathetically. In fact, rather than it feel threatening, the native aliens' plight is more a frustrating sense of injustice. Laureline's early exposure to the returning indigenous population sees her taking a firm stand with them as she becomes increasingly frustrated by Valerian's stance, which is in turn dictated by the Governor and his interpretation of the law.
It sounds like it's rather heavy stuff, but it's kept light by the absence of a physical threat, the good nature of the returning race, and the strip's wry humour. Reminded me a lot of some of the 2000AD stories in the '80s, but you don't have to be 40 plus to enjoy this – anyone that likes a good sci-fi tale is going to appreciate it.
And if you like that: Volume 5 is out soon.
