As the void between today and the Second World War grows wider it does seem that there's an increasing amount of tales associated with it bordering on the absurd and the comical. There's a danger there that the grim realities of those years get lost in grandiose heroic fiction and the contrivance of the sitcom, so any offering that reminds us of the efforts and sacrifices made is always going to be welcome.
Marvano, or Mark Van Oppen, is a Belgian author and artist often associated with science fiction works. This is a very different sort of story, and one firmly grounded in the personal experiences of those who served. There are no larger-than-life heroes here, but they are heroes all the same. They're the seven members of the crew of the S-Snowwhite, a Lancaster Bomber flying raids over Germany.
The story is about the fragility of their existence, the brief relationships they form and the incredible odds they faced on each flight, proving you don't always need an overblown plot to kill Hitler. A touching and fitting tribute to the memories of the Lancaster crews.
And if you liked that: By contrast you could try The First Flight Of The Phantom Eagle, published by Marvel
