With this latest volume the series really hits its stride as repercussions for past failures and the ghosts of the Cold War haunt CIA operatives. This all takes place during a visit by a delegation of Russians to Washington where Alpha and a small team must play host, so the question Alpha needs to answer as the bodies begin to pile up is whether this is an unfortunate coincidence or does one of the Russians have a score to settle.
Punctuated by misdirection and clever writing, the host of potential suspects and increasing deaths is part murder mystery, part thriller. Alpha’s character is given more space to grow as he attempts to sort the good guys from the bad, and as the book points out, they’re all supposed to be the good guys now.
Definitely my favourite of the series so far, using a canny combination of European politics, global espionage and good ol’ fashioned murder. Looking forward to reading more by Jigounov & Mythic.
