Well, this was an unexpected treat. There I was thinking we had received all we were going to get from the Worlds of Aldebaran books. And then along comes this.
An alien craft has approached Earth, but, mysteriously, it contains the remains of human occupants. Stranger still, it appears to have come from our own solar system. Marie (from Survivors and Return to Aldebaran) was part of the team assigned to check the vessel out and now must investigate something larger in the shadow of Neptune. Meanwhile, Kim is returning to Betelgeuse to face the Mantris that once attacked her.
As you might expect, there’s a fair amount of recapping necessary to get this storyline running. Fortunately it doesn’t damage the flow too much, although I must confess I prefer it when Leo just throws humans in at the deep end on fresh new worlds. But what this first book in a new cycle does achieve is to remind us of dangling plot threads and just how far Kim (and to some degree Marie) has come since the very beginning.
What they end up investigating out at Neptune is something I’ve enjoyed reading about in books by Arthur C Clarke and Peter F Hamilton, so I’m more than happy to see how Leo handles the concept.
In fairness, this is a bit of a slow start, but it’s necessary in order to set up what comes next. And I’m quite that what does come next will be worth the wait.
And if you liked that: Get yourself back to the very beginning and pick up Leo’s Aldebaran cycle.
