Perusing my bookcase (Ikea, birch veneer, in case you wondered) for another victim to review, I realised I'd completely overlooked a very enjoyable collection by one of our very own CCGB members.
'Assembled Cartoons' by Roger Penwill brings together the very best of his international cartoons in a full colour, 120 page collection, and is a great showcase for one of Roger's great loves; the caption-less gag. If you've tried your hand at it, you'll know how difficult it is to do well (been there, done that, failed miserably), but Roger's obviously inherited the 'silent comedy' gene judging by the fact that it's choc full of great gags. Just when you think the desert island cartoon has been done to death, he dreams up half a dozen more to make you think 'wish I'd thought of that!' Who could resist the image of a huge ship, dropping anchor at once such island, ready to rescue the hapless castaway. Then you notice the pair of legs sticking out from under the anchor. Ouch Ö
The wordless gag is of course especially appreciated in Europe, where language can so often be a barrier where humour is concerned, so it's little surprise that Roger's been so successful in exhibitions and competitions both here and abroad. It's interesting to note that all of the cartoons in the book were produced digitally, with a Wacom pad and Painter software. Actually .. not all the cartoons. One rarity included is a genuine 'ink and wash Penwill' hidden amongst it's digital brethren. It's testament to his skill with the computer that it's so blinkin' hard to tell the difference! For the terminally confused, Roger provides the answer on the back page. No looking!
Also featured in the book are several cartoons from the pages of The Countryman and others from the popular Country Cards range – great stuff!
This is a well put together book – the cartoons are very well reproduced – and certainly worth picking up. You can order it direct from www.penwill.com.
