CCGB member Nigel Sutherland stealthily released his gag collection a few months ago, so it was only by chance I spotted it online. Clearly, like the Arctic Monkeys, adverts for John West tuna and the movie Snakes On A Plane, Nige was aiming for his slice of the internet hype machine to get the word out there. And it worked. I bought one.
I've said it before, I'm not a gag cartoonist, and when I do attempt it I take an agonisingly long-time over it for a so-so result, so it's always a pleasure to see it done properly, and so effortlessly. You'll find everything in here from clever word play (the Caravan Club shop with the woman browsing hosiery for hold ups), to marital strife (man collecting wife from beauty salon, This bill's not a pretty sight either), to social comment (couple watching TV, and man says I haven't a clue who he is – must be a celebrity). And reprinted here, with Nige's kind permission, is my personal favourite. Funny stuff.
And if you liked that: Stick it in someone's Christmas stocking
