Definitely one for the grown-ups, this is the second volume of an intended trilogy that takes place in a dark and sometimes disturbing suburban setting that follows a group of hapless individuals through their everyday lives. Most of the story centres around Eric, the self-proclaimed King Of The Flies due to his fondness of wearing a giant fancy-dress fly head, but there are also psychotic bowlers, disenfranchised waitresses, bitter spouses and a few ghosts, one of whom has the unfortunate problem of having died in a skeleton costume that he’s now left wearing for eternity.
Mezzo and Pirus made their names creating crime comics, so this story about a dysfunctional group of people in a small community, is often – worryingly so at times – easier to relate to. It’s all very David Lynch with its surreal elements and twisted characters, but that’s certainly no bad thing, and like a Lynch movie it has its fair share of sex and violence, so certainly not suitable for younger eyes.
And if you liked that: Try Black Hole by Charles Burns and look out for the upcoming third volume.
