When you learn that the creators of Thorgal have teamed up to try their hands at a wild west tale, high expectations naturally follow. Well, you won't be disappointed. Leaving the story aside for a moment, from the very first page the artwork is astounding, from the detailing of the clothing through to the sepia-infused colour palette that invokes the spirit of the period and settles you in comfortably for the story ahead of you.
The tale begins with the arrival in Fort Laramie of Ambrosius Van Deer who is searching for his nephew, lost since his family were attacked by Native Americans years before. Word has reached him that the boy has been found and so he has travelled with his daughter to establish the truth of the matter. However, what he discovers is far from what he suspected, with the story taking an inspired twist – so typical of Van Hamme's writing – that then sets the course for the rest of the book.
There's certainly a hint of Dickens in the plot, but more so there are plenty of grateful nods to the classic and gritty westerns of the past. Together they make for a superb tale executed by two of the top talents in their field.
And if you liked that: Then you'll love Thorgal
