A welcome return for Thorgal in this, the tenth volume of the series. Thorgal stumbles upon the aftermath of an assault on a group of travellers, saving one of the survivors from the predations of a hungry bear. He than happens upon a farm and is offered the barn to sleep in for the night, only to be sold into slavery by the farmer to the local self-appointed lord. He is constructing himself a castle and needs manpower to do it, persuading the unwilling with a sun sword that strikes down its victims with a deadly heat ray.
Thorgal vows to escape and at the first opportunity he challenges the lord and turns the power of his sun sword against him. His flight takes him into the hands of the rebels and somebody from Thorgal's past who can shine a light on the origin of the sun sword, and offer a way to overcome it.
Van Hamme has an uncanny knack to turn in a tale with surprises and twists that rarely follows the path of least resistance. In Thorgal he's created a heroic adventurer rather than a bristling gruff anti-hero which appears to have become the norm elsewhere, and in Rosinski he's found the perfect collaborative partner to realise Thorgal's world. It's rich on detail and rich in ideas – a genuine modern classic.
And if you liked that: You should enjoy XIII if you've not already tried it
