You really do have to doff your hat to the modern day creative teams of Blake and Mortimer; firstly because they so brilliantly capture the spirit of comics of over half a century ago, and secondly due to the amazing way they mimic Edgar P. Jacobs original illustrative style.
This continuation of the story sees Blake and Mortimer, along with their old friend Nasir, heading towards Antarctica where they believe those plotting to disrupt the Brussels Exposition have their base. But it's not just their old adversary Olrik that they're up against this time but a mysterious fiend with a mind set on vengeance for something Professor Mortimer did in the past.
Getting to Antarctica is a problem in itself, but thanks to the cunning of Nasir they are even able to get ahead of their foes. What they don't realise is that their adversaries are one step ahead and have already taken hold of the British science station, meaning the heroes are soon divided and Mortimer is thrust into the heart of the villain's base.
I can't say I was too impressed with how they chose to show Mortimer's consciousness racing across to the other side of the world in pursuit of Olrik's – it all seemed a bit daft – bu then, to be fair, if this is intended as a tale that embraces how we viewed science back in the 1950s then perhaps that's fair enough. Even so, it's a small hiccup, and the story is soon back on track and drawing the threads together for it's twist ending with a hearty dose of thrills and adventure that James Bond would no doubt approve of. And I particularly enjoyed those lost four panels.
And if you enjoyed that: Plenty more Blake and Mortimer out there for you to get your teeth into
