What's genuinely interesting about Largo Winch is the circumstances that surround the hero, meaning situations are given anything from a slight to an exceptionally different spin due to his wealth and position. This volume is certainly a lot less about the world of business, but Largo's ability to deal with the events are partly stemmed from his enormous inheritance and influence.
Largo's best friend, Simon, is holidaying in Burma (Myanmar) when he's observed by one of the country's generals and an American operative via intelligence data. Knowing his connection to Largo they concoct a plot where Simon believes he's accidentally killed a police officer and is sentenced to hang; all this in the hope that it will bring Largo into the country where he will attempt to contact the rebels' secret base to facilitate a rescue. It's the rebels that control the poppy fields, and the general and the American, Anderson, what it for themselves.
Simon's a resourceful individual by himself, so he's not adverse to an escape attempt or two, but the nature of the environment and then Fort Makiling, where he is eventually held and is to be executed, are just too imposing.
Fortunately Largo's on his way, but he's playing directly into the corrupt general's hands, and not every friend is as they seem either.
The art in this book is excellent and, like Van Hamme's other collaborators, brings his scripts to life in all their detail and glory. A great read.
