Thorgal made life difficult for himself a few volumes ago when his only intent was to remove himself from the machinations of the gods. Instead he's ended up being manipulated by Kris because the result of those actions was the loss of all his memories of his family and past life. However, due to an incident in the previous book, Thorgal is already suspicious of Kris, and when one of their captain's returns from a raid with a captive who recognises him, Thorgal acts.
Kris is determined to prevent him from learning any more, but Thorgal is one step ahead and attempts an escape which ends with him hailing the gods from the top of a tower, calling on them to return him to his former life. In a flash of lightening he is snatched from the tower and finds himself with the goddess Frigg who tells him that Odin will not grant him his desire, although she suggests that if Thorgal dare enter the land of the giants and steal back Odin's ring that was taken by the king of the giants he may look favourably upon him.
Naturally, he does, and finds himself of Lilliputian scale in the Giant's court and the plaything of the princess. His problem is whether or not he can overcome the odds when his size is so against him.
This has been quite a daring story-arc due to the length of time Thorgal has been, effectively, somebody else, but his sense of heroism and skills as a warrior never deserted him and its those that save his bacon when the time comes. Rosinski gets to show off his illustrative skills again with the bizarre court of the giants, not to mention their weird mounts later in the tale, culminating in a story that mixes subtle humour and adventure. As always Van Hamme has penned a fantastic tale that is bursting with originality, myth, magic and mayhem.
In Rosinski and Van Hamme's hands Thorgal leads a hard and difficult life in a brutal, fantastical world, but I for one am grateful for it.
And if you liked that: Look out for Vol 15, The Cage, coming soon
