Now here's an original idea. A near future Earth is stricken by environmental disaster after environmental disaster, causing enormous human suffering and major ecological catastrophes. Societies are collapsing or have collapsed, and for the survivors the coming months and years are uncertain.
The story follows the crew of an environmental action group aboard the Kapital, separated and now searching for their sister ship, The Massive. All on board are environmentalists, but the state of the world leaves them in an uncertain position and unsure of their purpose beyond securing food, water and fuel to aid their search.
The success of this book is largely down to its inspired take on the post-disaster world, with intelligent writing, strong characters and perfect visuals. It's certainly a book with a brain, with a global vision, and with a rather unnerving ability to feel a little too close to the truth.
There's no masked baddy or sinister organisation, just the question of survival on a planet that appears to be falling apart.
If you're after something a little more cerebral then you won't go far wrong with The Massive.
And if you liked that: It's been well received, so look out for another collected volume soon, or pick up the monthly comic
