So, Hellboy’s dead. But the story doesn’t end there. As a creature from the pit Hellboy now finds himself descending into the abyss and having to confront gargantuan monstrosities and the Hellish politics of the suddenly timid lords that rule there. This involves allying himself with the spectral form of Edward Grey and, perhaps, slaying Hell’s head honcho, although the truth of that isn’t entirely clear. Hellboy’s biggest problem is that he’s still being played and yet he stubbornly refuses to join in the game, so we get to meet two of his siblings who intend to take matters of his hand into their own.
The longer aim here, I hope, is to tie in with the apocalyptic events of BPRD: Hell On Earth and ultimately offer some form of conclusion, but judging from this first instalment Hellboy’s got some way to go yet and by the end of this book his potential options appear to broaden. If only he weren’t dead.
I really enjoy John Arcudi’s take on Mignola’s universe, but to get Mignola back on artwork and writing really does offer a fresh, invigorating kick to the proceedings. Mignola is sparse with the words and evokes so much mood with the minimum of penmanship that you’re soon wrapped up within the lean but hungry narrative. Good to have him back.
And if you liked that: Don’t miss out on BPRD
