Shazam! The Monster Society Of Evil by Jeff Smith
Publisher: DC ISBN: 978-1-4012-0974-2
Jeff Smith is a superb comic talent and one of those rare people who understands childlike wonder. He's a captivating graphic storyteller and a good writer to boot, and because he can do both he knows when a picture, or often an expression, will say more.
The story concerns the DC character Captain Marvel, a character I have never really followed in any detail, but suffice to say he is the alter-ego of a small boy who can change into the superhero upon uttering the magic word Shazam!. You don't need to know anything about the character or the background, just be willing to sit back and enjoy it.
If superhero comics aren't your thing but you enjoy a quirky, well-told and beautifully illustrated story, then I urge you to give this one a whirl.
And if you liked that: Try Jeff Smith's hugely influential and utterly charming Bone series, available as separate volumes, or, if you've the upper-body strength, one stand-alone book. Highly recommended.
