Clifton: Kidnapping by Turk and de Groot
Publisher: Cinebook ISBN: 978-1-905460-87-8
This is the sixth book in the series, although, for some unexplained reason, they're clearly not in their original order which makes for the occasional bit of frustrating reading. However, that little moan aside, this is an entertaining read about an ex-British spy as seen through the eyes of it's Franco-Belgian creators. In this particular story Clifton is taking his scout group camping when one of the boys from a wealthier family is abducted for ransom, so Clifton and his group go to the rescue.
If you've ever enjoyed Asterix then you've every reason to enjoy this. There's a nice balance of wit and fun with some absolutely cracking artwork. Turk not only draws an astoundingly detailed (and correct) British street but he's also a master at bringing recognisable vehicles to life on the page. In fact, in comics, I can't think of anyone who can better him (go on, correct me). These are the sort of illustrations I pore over.
And if you liked that: Cinebook has produced a few so far, although books 4 and 5 are bit of a disappointment in that they up the action and lose some of the fun. However, do go back to book 1 (titled My Dear Wilkinson) and enjoy.
