The Melusine books are collections of, usually, lengthy gag strips that fill the whole page. Melusine is a young witch who inhabits a world of fairytale and folklore, and they're both charmingly written and beautifully drawn. The theme of this one is love, and often how it goes horribly wrong. By no means twee, it's got quite a sharp sense of humour, and even a bit of black comedy.

You're not really getting character development or twisty-turny plots with Melusine, because that's not what they're about. They're self-contained jokes neatly wrapped in little stories, more akin to a series of set pieces in a sketch show. The real beauty of Melusine, though, from a British perspective, is that it's a strip that can be enjoyed by both boys and girls, which is something of a rarity these days. My daughter loves it, and it's offering her a doorway into cartooning and comics that we'd struggle to find elsewhere. So, if you've got a daughter, niece or grand-daughter then give it a whirl, and perhaps through sharing it they'll understand a little more about what you.
