Larry was 12 years old when war broke out, so his memories of the war are shaped by evacuation, the bombing of Birmingham and rubber-necking at a local POW camp. His personal experiences are quite evident within this collection, with many cartoons featuring quirks of home life during that era, but when it came to the war beyond these shores, as he says so himself, he had the benefit of hindsight which was a far different experience from the cartoonists working during the war. And just because these were drawn at a later date it doesn't make them any less funny or poignant (as with Dad's Army, for example). One particularly brilliant visual gag sees the hoisting of the Japanese flag with its radiating beams and slap bang in the centre is the word BRASSO. Or there's the one with female soldiers being taught unarmed combat via poster showing a swift kick in the privates, so to speak. This is a good sized collection, with oodles of good gags throughout, that will be appreciated by anyone with an interest in the art of cartooning.
