Guess what? There's a Smurf movie coming out, so that means the perfect opportunity to reprint some Smurf tales for a new generation. 25 years ago I remember watching an animated Smurf cartoon on children's TV, but I've never sat down and read the original strips before, and I can't really think of a time since then when anyone in the UK has had a chance to look at them.

Unlike the larger albums of Asterix or Lucky Luke, Papercutz has decided to reprint these to a smaller size equivalent to a large paperback. They're not terribly long stories, so in the first collection they've managed to squeeze in three.

The title story, The Purple Smurfs, has almost vampiric qualities (but doesn't everything nowadays) with infected Smurfs biting infected Smurfs after Lazy-Smurf is bitten by a strange bug, and it, like all the strips, has a good sense of humour throughout.

Maybe The Smurfs are too twee and just carry too much baggage for some people, but I rather enjoyed these few tales. Might give the movie a miss though.
