This latest Lucky Luke adventure sees him being asked to travel to Denver, to the offices of Wells Fargo. People are losing confidence in the company due to bandits holding up the stagecoaches, despite the fact that Wells Fargo always reimburses any loss, so the manager wants to put on a show and have Luke accompany his best stagecoach driver, several passengers and a case of gold, and have them safely delivered to San Francisco. Luke accepts, and it's not long before most of the continent seems to be aware of the spectacle and the lure of the gold has tempted even the meeker inhabitants to have a pop at robbing the stage.
This is another fine example of why Lucky Luke should be on your reading list. Blending a little history with a tight story and a wealth of recurring jokes, visual gags and general witticisms, it's a pleasure to read every page. Goscinny is a master of comic writing in both senses of the word, and all perfectly punctuated by the art of Morris. Enjoyable moments include the card sharp who is a either a victim of his success or of the bumps in the road, the oppressed husband who eventually finds his voice, and the Indian translator, and these are just a few that pepper every page.
There were over 40 titles produced under the partnership of Goscinny and Morris, not to mention many more with other creative combinations, so it's good to know that there are still plenty to come.
