XIII: The Night Of August Third (vol 7)

ISBN: 978-1-84918-078-8

Following on from the events of the previous book, XIII, now known as Jason Fly, is still on the hunt to discover his past and is trapped in the town that he believes he grew up in. The local sheriff and town bigwig want him out of the way, and a villain from XIII's recent past, the Mongoose, is attempting to dispatch him to, which has resulted in XIII being accused of the murders the Mongoose is responsible for.

Now joined by Mayor Jones, they're on the run within the small community, having to outwit their pursuers while still trying to reveal the events of the past. It doesn't begin to slot into place until XIII discovers a diary kept on his behalf by an old family friend which gives the first true indication to his former life but at the same time reveals a greater tragedy. Armed with this knowledge he can now confront those responsible and take a step closer to recovering his true identity.

The combination of Van Hamme's intense and multi-threaded story-telling with Vance's meticulous and powerful artwork power each volume along at a cracking pace. Considering the confines within which they've set this segment they still find it a breeze to keep you enthralled with Jason Fly's predicament and willing him to overcome. A genuinely riveting action thriller.
