The despicable and dastardly Mongoose affects a daring escape from a high security prison while XIII, now Jason McLane, is courted by the President to be his personal intelligence agent and track down whoever is Number I. McLane accepts and decides the only way to take the mystery forward is to try to find Kim Rowland. He's assigned a Secret Service operative to assist him and, naturally, enlists the help of Major Jones, but almost straight away something or someone is making life difficult for him. His path eventually leads him to the hospital that the current President was taken to after the earlier attempted assassination, and his medical records, and it's here that the pieces begin to fall into place.

By now there's a lot of back story to wade through, characters to follow, and history unearthed, so this is certainly no jumping on point, but you wouldn't start a novel halfway through so nor should you start with this volume. If you have been reading from the beginning Van Hamme takes the time and effort to ease you through the story with subtle reminders and prompts, weaving yet more threads of XIII's past and introducing more surprises.

This is still a stand out series and deserves the acclaim it's receiving. A darn good read.

And if you liked that: There's another coming along in a moment…
