XIII: Three Silver Watches (vol 11)

/By Vance & Van Hamme
Publisher: Cinebook
ISBN: 978-1-84918-109-9

The revelations about his past life keep coming for XIII, and now his new found father is keen to share more about the family history, including how their ancestors first came to the USA and what met them there.

This is a very heavy chapter in the ongoing saga, with a layered story steeped in drama, tragedy and loss but still utterly captivating because of Van Hamme's intertwining plot and the gloriously detailed artwork of Vance. What's particularly rewarding is how two guys from Brussels can so confidently and realistically depict countries and times so far removed from where they themselves live when so many others fail to make the grade. We visit America, Mexico, Southeast Asia and the fictional Costa Verde, and span 1900 to the present day, and it's all done with a loving eye for detail that draws you right in.

Although XIII sees some action in this chapter, it's his family's past that sits centre stage, which also sets up some further interesting conundrums and revelations. If you're still not reading XIII then you really should be.

And if you liked that: Book 12 out soon
