Another Thorgal book, and another unexpected twist. I love the way Van Hamme approaches these stories, setting them in the time of the Vikings with all the history that entails, but allowing elements of fables and legends to bleed into that world, and to cap it all off the very origins of this saga are in science fiction meaning he can dip into that particular vein whenever he feels like it too.
So what we have this time round is a good ol' time travel caper complete with the inevitable paradox or two thrown in for good measure. The fact that it all takes place in a world of swords and chain-mail makes it all the richer.
Thorgal still has no idea as to who he is, and we're not many pages in before he receives a fatal wound when Kriss accidentally shouts his original name and distracts him. So big shocks all round and we're barely started. I'm going to hesitate in giving anything more away about the plot, but I will say if you've not read any of the earlier volumes you'll do yourself a favour by getting up to speed first. It's not that you won't follow what's going on, but it will make for a more satisfying read.
As with all time-travel stories, the resulting paradoxes that are thrown up can jar a little, but Rosinkski and Van Hamme go to great lengths to smooth these out. A wonderfully inventive story from a consistently superb creative team.
And if you liked that: Van Hamme's Wayne Shelton is being made available soon – looking forward to it
