Things have been going from bad to worse for XIII and his associates. Despite beating the odds again and again they're in dire straits as prisoners of the Costaverdean government and the USA wants them extradited. There seems to be very little they can do about it, especially as XIII's former wife, now President of the country, appears to have sold them out for the greater political good.
At their lowest ebb it looks as if it's all over, until, that is, masked gunmen hold up the convey and free the prisoners from the under the noses of the US observers. Posing as an armed militia, they're in fact Costaverdean troops in disguise sent by the President.
So now XIII's group have their freedom, but nowhere to go and no resources. Fortunately Mullway believes he now knows the location of the third silver watch that will direct them to the treasure that is Maxililian's gold, but to find the watch they have to negotiate a dammed valley and find the church at the bottom of it. And they've still got the USA to deal with who are never far away.
It has been desperate, but with nothing else to lose XIII is becoming a more formidable opponent. Van Hamme is gearing the story up for its conclusion, tying up sub-plots and drawing together story threads, but there's still time for the unexpected (and sad) too. Despite being fifteen volumes in, the story has lost none of its pace or ingenuity – and just a handful of volumes to goÂ…
