Largo's in serious trouble and looks as if he may lose everything regardless of his next move. On the run, and with his friends turning their backs on him, Largo needs to piece together what's really going on and find a way to right the wrongs.
It begins with Largo holed up in Canada and pursued by Mounties, and if not for his friends having a change of heart a river plunge would have ended up with him disappearing over the edge of a waterfall. Fortunately for Largo, this isn't the case, and he finds himself being cared for by those he cares about. One of those people is Jessie Remington, an American gold medallist at skiing, and the perfect angle Largo needs to turn this situation round, which began of course with the closure of a sports equipment factory that manufactured skis.
There's now a strong cast of supporting characters and Van Hamme pulls them into play as back-up for Largo as he infiltrates Speed One and begins to pick apart the murky world of stock options and corporate greed, and all the time staying one step ahead of the law.
It's a credit to Van Hamme and Francq that a story this far removed from the traditional comic canon works so well. There's a lot to follow, from discussions on the stock options and the shenanigans of its manipulation to characters reappearing from past volumes who need recapping and reinstating in Largo's world. That said, it may be wordy at times, but it's counterbalanced with plenty of action and the master strokes of one of comic's greatest thriller writers. It's also drawn with the care and attention it deserves, breathing life and drama into Van Hamme's words with finely crafted panels and the detail to draw you deep into the suspense.
Two of comicdoms finest creators working on one of the best books out there. Enjoy.
And if you liked that: you should also enjoy Lady S, also written by Van Hamme
