The setting for Spooks is the very beginning of the twentieth century and, due to its American setting, that sits us comfortably between the end of the wild west and the beginnings of mobsters and molls, so the government backed Spooks comfortably straddles the two eras while their remit is to deal with something else entirely.
This time they’re off to Cuba, still occupied by US forces after they drove the Spanish out four years previously. Something odd has been happening to the US troops that may or may not involve Yellow fever. Supposedly dead men are spotted walking the streets, which brings to mind the zombies of Haitian voodoo, except in Cuba the authorities blame it on the local religion of Santeria. Chapel and his team go in, with Trumble and Bishop operating undercover, which brings Trumble into immediate danger and an experience that will mark him for the rest of his life.
There’s an air of Mission: Impossible about this one, and set against the historical background of Cuba and the supernatural overtones it’s a story that’ll keep you hooked through to the end. Trumble’s misfortune is a bit of a shock to say the least, and by the end of the book they are, by no means, on top of the situation, particularly when you consider the state of Kathryn.
Spooks is trying, and succeeding, to do something different by mixing and subverting genres. As we’re three books in we’re getting to know the characters a little more deeply now, and I look forward to learning more about what makes them tick in the concluding part of this story arc, particularly how they’ll all deal with the events that close this volume.
And if you liked that: Book four to follow soon
