Trebaldi’s grip on the papal throne is beginning to look a little shaky. He’s unable to pay his warrior monks who are enforcing his brutal crackdown throughout the city and the Scorpion continues to play on his mind as a shameful reminder of his past. His one ray of light is that the King of France has sent ambassadors to Rome promising support, including the news that two chests of gold coin will follow to alleviate Trebaldi’s financial problems.
One of the ambassadors has caught the eye of Trebaldi, but she in turn has taken note of the Scorpion and makes her way to his home to reveal herself as an intimate piece of his past. They arrange a meeting, but unfortunately this coincides with the blossoming of the Scorpion’s relationship with Mejai, who witnesses the reunited pair embracing from the rooftops.
Things get further entangled when Trebaldi’s brother, Nelio, having witnessed last issue’s final confrontation, begins to make his own play, while members of the other ancient families begin to play games with Nelio. At the centre of all these machinations is the promise of the approaching gold, and it soon becomes clear that everyone’s trying to play everyone else, treachery and deception are everywhere, and the Scorpion may not even be aware he’s being played from all sides.
A tantalising instalment with many snaking threads and the added ingredient of Trebaldi’s growing desperation. The resolution is perfect, raising a broad grin and much satisfaction on my part. A really excellent series – you should be reading it.
And if you liked that: Keep em peeled for volume 7
