If you’re a Private Eye reader there’s a good chance you’ll be aware of the work of David Ziggy Greene. He produced the excellent Scene and Heard cartoon-illustrated journalism that catalogued snippets of UK life that was both amusing and revealling. He did this for nine years before Covid sort of put the kibosh on it – a real shame – but it’s not the only kind of cartooning he’s been involved with. For many years he has found a welcome outlet for his talent in Europe, and those strips have gone largely unnoticed in the UK, until now.
Vintage is a collection that showcases much of that work, as well as other chosen pieces, including a strip he put together as a 13-year-old. Most cartoonists, I’m sure, would duck an opportunity to show off work from such an era, but it is surpringly good. My favourite, however, is the short story called Hush, a glimpse of which is below. Beautifully drawn and packed with humour, it proves what a talent David Ziggy Greene is. Here’s hoping it encourages him to share more.
