Veteran Country Life cartoonist Annie Tempest (our club’s strip cartoonist of the year in 1989) has produced her Tottering By Gently strip for the magazine for 32 years. Annie is now launching her latest book, The Twilight Years, and is mounting an exhibition which showcases never-before-seen Tottering by Gently originals, offering fans an affectionate glimpse into the twilight years of Lord and Lady Tottering’s family life in the English countryside.
Reflecting on her new work, Annie muses: “I’ve finally caught up with Daffy Tottering in ball-park age and over the years I’ve become more and more like her. I too am now the person who once gate-crashed parties and now finds herself sneaking out of them. Technology baffles me and I can barely keep up with how fast young people talk and think. Like all Boomers, I’m trying to get my head around offspring wearing Vivo Barefoot shoes, when court shoes are obviously more appropriate and other important issues. You have to laugh, really. Bring on The Twilight Years, I say and if you’re not there yet, use this book as a manual to get a glimpse of what’s coming your way.”
The exhibition, which is free, is at Reindeer Antiques, 81 Kensington Church Street, London W8 4BG between 31 October and 22 November. It will be open at the following times:
Monday 10 am–5:30 pm
Tuesday 10 am–5:30 pm
Wednesday 10 am–5:30 pm
Thursday 10 am–5:30 pm
Friday 10 am–5:30 pm
