We finally get to learn of the origin of the mysterious man-like being that’s brought Kathy to the Amazon. We’ve seen it in action several times now, and understand what it can do, but its exact nature will come as something of a surprise.
Beginning in Germany, 1943, we get to see it being sold to a travelling circus to become one of the many exhibits. When a senior German officer brings his son for a private viewing, the being’s extraordinary talents are revealed during a beating by the circus owner. This results in the officer taking possession of the being and delivering it into the hands of Dr Hoffmann. Hoffman is the elderly German now stuck in a narrow tributary of the Amazon and surrounded by aggressive locals. Fortunately for him, his connection to the being – and its connection to the locals – is enough to save the lives of himself and Reinhart.
Meanwhile, with Délio now healed (thanks to a different intervention by the mysterious giant), he and Kathy are looking to avoid the confrontation with the natives. By staying away from the stuck boat they hope they can find their way back to the dispensary. After building a raft, they begin a swift journey riding the current while the Germans are forced to switch to the native’s canoes and battle against it. Slowly but surely, the various sub-plots and characters are all drifting towards the same spot.
I’m really enjoying the reveals here, and the plotting is keeping everything intriguing and fresh. Anyone that’s seen an Indiana Jones movie or enjoyed a Hellboy story will be well aware of the Nazis messing around with the paranormal, so this has been an interesting spin on that. And we’re not done yet – there’s one more volume to come to wrap everything up!
