Worst A.I. effort ever

I have been tinkering with an artificial-intelligence (AI) system called Co-painter, primarily as a speedy way to colour in my black-and-white cartoons, and I thought I would try its text-to-image tool. This picture – incredibly – is what it came up with in response to this prompt:

“Please draw a person in a motorcade through Washington DC, looking at a crowd with blank placards lining the road. Do it as a simple black-and-white line drawing suitable for a pocket cartoon in a magazine or newspaper”

Badly wrong on absolutely every level. It isn’t a simple black-and-white line drawing: the polar opposite, in fact. The motorcade which it has drawn holds the record for the lowest number of vehicles (zero) and where is the Washington skyline? It looks like maybe a cross between the Brandenburg Gate and the Acropolis. The blank placards which I asked for are completely missing, and just look at the shadows cast by the people on the left-hand side of the road (or is it a runway, to judge by the markings?).

Co-painter’s colouring-in facility on the other hand is very good. Look out for my article in June’s Jester.
