With three missing nabobs and now Lord Bullock’s disappearance to contend with, the East India Company is deeply concerned about a situation spiralling beyond their control. Unfazed by the pressures placed upon him, Alexander Martin remains level-headed as they track Bullock down – not that he wants to be found. Bullock may be at the centre of it all, which means those closest to him could hold the answers.

This is a story built around good intentions made following bad decisions, and how difficult it can be to escape something that’s happened in the past, particularly when someone feels it impossible to belong. I’m treading carefully so not to give the ending away, but I couldn’t help but think the villain of the piece would be rewritten if this was made into a movie or TV show. The book makes the right decision though, because the most effective villains in stories are those born from tragedy.

Conrad and Wilbur pull off a surprisingly satisfying tale, helped rather than hindered by a cartoon illustration style and a mature narrative. Another welcome addition to the Cinebook Expresso line.

And if you liked that: Wyoming Doll and Western also highly recommended from Cinebook’s Expresso
